Did you know that in our area of New England ticks live year-round!?!??! They do not die or hibernate in the winter. Nope, they still hang-out hungry for a blood meal from you, your pets, your friends and family. They are truly hardy buggers too. Snow-no problem, heat-no problem, rain-no problem. Do not worry, the ticks will survive it all!
What you do need to know are a few helpful tips to keep you and your pet safe. Never use tweezers to pull off a tick. If you find a tick on your pet and your pet is not on a preventative and the tick is actually attached you want to wear a glove and grasp it at the base where it is attached to the skin and fur area. Pull it straight off. Do not squish it while attached or twist it or tear it open while removing it. That can potentially spread diseases.
There are a few helpful tick removers that help you such as Ticked Off, TickCheck tick remover, and other items that are sold over the counter that may help you grasp the tick at the base if you have any issues with your hands performing a pincer motion.
Prevention is key to good tick control. We can’t comment on yard sprays but we will mention that most major pest control companies offer some form of tick control for your property. You may want to call them to check out the options they have for your tick control needs.
Prevention for your pets is key too! Remember there are many products that repel ticks but this means potentially that a tick could attempt to bite your pet then be repelled and wind-up on you or walking around your home looking for another blood meal.
